Legal Observer Training: 26 November 2016

Green and Black Cross and the Network for Police Monitoring (Netpol) are offering free legal observer training top activists from  across South East England.

The free half-day training event takes place in Horsham on Saturday 26 November.

What are legal observers?

Legal observers are trained volunteers who support the legal rights of activists. They provide basic legal guidance and are independent witnesses of police behaviour at protests. They support protesters by distributing bust cards, briefing activists about their rights, keeping notes about the actions of the police. and monitoring arrests.

The organisers say, “This is pertinent training for activists in preparation for the next wave of opposition to extreme energy extraction, including fracking, in the south-east of England.”

“If you’re an experienced activist there will be parts you know already, but the depth we go into should give you more confidence and knowledge of how to deal with the police. Whether you’re in a group or attending as an individual, this extensive training offers you important skills to support other campaigners.”

I am David Aherne of Worthing Green Party and I had the pleasure of meeting one of your members at a Frack Free Sussex meeting. Earlier this year I trained with Al Gore to be one of his Climate Reality Leadership Corps, doing presentations to groups on climate change. There is no charge, only travelling expenses from Worthing. Please let me know if Frack Free Surrey would like a presentation at your November or January meeting. It lasts 45 minutes, plus time for questions.
